In his practice, Melle van Herwaarden reflects on his immediate surroundings. He goes through his daily life with a keen eye and carefully collects his observations. Found footage, archival research and most urgent: personal relations, initiate starting points of new bodies of work.
With a cinematographic view, he constructs figurative paintings that can be associated with staged scenery as well as traditional portraiture. He has an investigative attitude within the technicalities of the medium and by pursuing a realist approach to subject matter, the paintings of Melle van Herwaarden aim to be sharp and grounded works that deal with an empathic view and painterly joy.
