Lukas Müller

Germany

b.1986

Lukas Müller is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of marginality, displacement, and the fragility of human existence. Living and working on the periphery of urban landscapes, Müller’s practice is deeply rooted in the act of collecting, transforming, and recontextualizing found objects and fragments of everyday life. His works often reflect the struggles of those trapped in dysfunctional systems—individuals who are burdened by unreciprocated love, immobility, and a longing for the past.
Müller’s artistic process involves minimal yet deliberate interventions: cutting, deforming, spray-painting, and rearranging objects to strip them of their original function and imbue them with new meaning. His wall pieces, such as those incorporating credit cards from a stolen wallet, challenge notions of ownership and value, while his sculptural works often feature heavy metal objects that evoke a sense of permanence and resistance. These pieces disrupt the flow of everyday life, preserving the singularity of the marginalized and questioning the systems that render them invisible.
In recent years, Müller has returned to painting after a decade-long hiatus, creating intimate portraits of sleepers. These works capture the vulnerability and uncanny stillness of the human body in repose, offering a glimpse into a private world where the boundaries between wakefulness and dreams blur. The sleepers, rendered with meticulous attention to detail—wrinkled t-shirts, ashy eyelids, flexed fists—invite viewers to confront the discomfort of intruding upon another’s intimacy.
Müller’s work has been exhibited internationally, including collaborations with Lucas Hirsch and solo presentations at galleries such as Paulina Caspari in Munich and Elizabeth Moss Gallery in Maine. Through his diverse practice, Lukas Müller continues to explore the tension between presence and absence, mobility and stagnation, and the personal and the political.
